Video Contest Open January 6th to February 14th

FAQ

Is this a contest just for Radio & Television Arts students?  How can I compete with their video skills?

DEFINITELY NOT. This is a contest run by Ryerson students, for ALL students at Ryerson.

The videos for this contest are meant to be grassroots, homemade, simple statements from many student perspectives.  Students are encouraged to use any means of video recording (digital cameras, cell phone cameras, webcams etc) to capture their student experience and show it off to the rest of the world.

This contest is an opportunity to show off your creative skills and to redefine what a "video" really can be in today's digital age.

We are more interested in good content rather than snazzy productions. Production value will be considered, but not over a simple and creative video.

Can I use copyrighted music in my video?

NO, except for the sites listed below. Copyrighted music not belonging to the students submitting the video is not allowed since it is an unauthorized use. Videos containing copyrighted material cannot be displayed on the "RU Ryerson?" Web site and therefore cannot participate in the voting process of this contest.

You may use royalty-free music from the following sites:

http://www.incompetech.com
http://openmusicarchive.org/
http://opsound.org/
http://www.musopen.com/

However, you MUST give credit to the artist(s) in the credits section of your video. If you do not show the source, your video risks disqualification.

Students are encouraged to either find usable material from there, compose their own music or simply avoid using music in their videos. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to email us.

Can I use an original piece of music in my video?

YES.If you can show proof that you or a member of your group are the composer of an original song or instrumental piece of music, you can use that material in your video.

Can I submit more than one video if I'm submitting one on my own and one with a group?

YES. Students can enter the contest  more than once and are expected to disclose their participation in other groups with all of their co-collaborators.

Will the prize money be split evenly amongst the group, or does the group decide how much each person receives?

The "RU Ryerson?" prizes are as follows:

First prize         $5,000.00
Second prize    $2,500.00
Third prize        $1,500.00

For winning submissions by individuals, prizes will be awarded to the my.ryerson ID that was used to enter. For winning submissions by teams, prizes will be awarded to the primary my.ryerson ID attached to the entry. Ryerson University does not take any responsibility in the disbursement of winnings amongst of any team submissions, if applicable.

How do I know if my video has been uploaded successfully?

You will receive a confirmation number after the upload if the file has been received. Please make a note of the confirmation number. If you experience problems uploading your file you can also leave a DVD with your file on it at the Student Information and Advising Centre (POD 144) just inside the main doors to Jorgenson Hall.

NO. Videos must not exceed three (3) minutes in length. The "Credits" are not included in the 3 minute rule. We expect you to do a simple credits list to show members of your group (if applicable) and who composed your choice of music (if applicable). The credits section can go past the 3 minute mark. BUT THE ACTUAL CONTENT/STORY OF THE VIDEO CANNOT EXCEED THREE (3) MINUTES. Longer content should be edited to time before submitting to "RU Ryerson?" as an entry in the contest.
